A fan-favorite Dr Pepper drink is coming back to drive-thrus for a limited time

Root beer, it might be time to start watching your back.

For years, root beer floats have been the undisputed classic. But lately, people are starting to realize that Dr Pepper and ice cream make a pretty great pair, too.

And once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere. Blue Bell has a Dr Pepper Float half-gallon in the freezer aisle. Dippin’ Dots created its own take on the “spicy soda” treat. Even Dr Pepper itself has leaned in, launching a Vanilla Float soda that basically builds the combo right into the bottle.

But for some fans, the moment it really clicked came from a fast food favorite that brought the combo into the spotlight: a frozen, creamy Dr Pepper drink from the frozen custard king itself—Freddy’s. And now, that treat is officially back on the menu.

Freddy’s Brings Back the Dr Pepper Frost

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is bringing back a returning favorite from last summer: the Dr Pepper Frost.

Unlike many fast food “ice cream” desserts—which often can’t technically be called ice cream because of their ingredient lists—Freddy’s frozen custard is the real deal. It’s made with egg yolks and slow-churned, giving it a richer, denser, smoother texture than traditional ice cream. It’s also churned fresh throughout the day, so it doesn’t sit long enough to get icy—just consistently soft and creamy.

It’s already hard to beat on its own, but when blended with Dr Pepper (plus an extra shot of its signature 23-flavor formula) and topped with whipped cream, it becomes something worth making a dedicated drive-thru trip for.

“Freddy’s Frosts feature a lighter, refreshing taste made with our signature freshly churned vanilla frozen custard,” said Sr. Director of Menu Strategy & Innovation Rick Petralia in a press release. “We first offered the Dr Pepper Frost last summer and it became an instant hit. Combining our rich and creamy frozen custard with the one-of-a-kind taste of Dr Pepper’s iconic 23 flavors creates a delicious and cool treat that’s especially enjoyable as the weather starts to warm up.”
